Steps to Tick Removal From Humans

There are several opinions when it comes to methods of tick removal from humans, so it’s important to talk to someone who speaks from experience and do your research before trying these methods. There is no doubt that if you have a serious illness, or if you think you are having an allergic reaction that you should seek medical attention immediately.

The Mythical Methods of Tick Removal

It is important that ticks are removed as soon as possible in order to reduce or eliminate the risk of infection altogether. Always exercise caution when you are hearing about a method that isn’t advised by a doctor or a veterinarian.

One method that has been suggested for tick removal from humans is to smother ticks with Petroleum jelly or Vaseline, or finger nail polish. This method really accomplishes nothing more than smothering the tick. Even if a tick is smothered in these substances, they can still feed on the skin and it won’t kill them or distract them. When a tick is feeding on the skin it is generally transmitting disease so be cautious.

It has also been said that setting the tick aflame or even using a sharp object to attack it will get rid of it. Beware that the shock of the flame or trying to kill it with a sharp object will only make matters worse. The shock or the force of something could trigger it to automatically release a large amount of organisms into the skin, and as we know this can be fatal.

The Most Effective Ways to Remove Ticks

The safest method of tick removal from humans, is to use a pair of small tweezers to grab it while grabbing it as close to the skin as possible. This is critical, because once a substance has been excreted by the tick, that substance can help them hang onto the skin. In addition, getting close will help you pull them away at the source of destruction, as their mouths are equipped with tiny fang-like structures that can help them stick to you as they feed.

It is important that you keep a container nearby so that you can put the tick into it, and label it with any pertinent information. If you are the one removing the tick, then go ahead and label it with the name and age of the person, along with any other information that you can provide. You will want to try and obtain anything else that the tick came into contact with, because it is probably toxic. If you did use tweezers, then it would be wise to disinfect them, and anything else that you think the tick may have touched. You don’t want to yourself or someone else at risk.

Some Things to Remember

Remember, when using fine-tipped tweezers, you want to get as close to the skin as possible so you can get a good grasp on the tick. However, be careful that you don’t squeeze or crush the tick, as this could trigger it eliminating more toxins into the skin that are harmful.

You will want to try and pull the tick away in a slow but steady motion. Don’t try to rip it away, as your hand could slip and defeat the purpose of this highly successful method. Exercising caution is always important in this case, and getting the tick near the source is critical. Once the tick has been separated from its mouth, there will no longer be any transmission of disease. If by chance you do crush the tick, be sure and wash the area with warm, soapy water, and wash your hands thoroughly as well. You can never be too careful.
